A wheelchair conversion is a minivan which has been modified to allow
for wheelchair access. You
may have seen
these
kinds of conversions on minivan cabs around town. Individuals enter the
vehicle while
in their wheelchair by
means of either
a manual fold-out, or powered retracting ramp. They then remain in
their wheelchair, locked safely in place, throughout the ride.
We are able
to convert the Honda
Odyssey,
Dodge Grand
Caravan, Volkswagen
Routan, Chrysler
Town & Country, and Ford E-350.
There are
two methods of
locking the wheelchair in place:
retractable
tie-down restraints that hook onto the chair, or a
floor mounted EZ
Lock docking
system. Both methods
have their unique advantages. The docking system is easier to
use but wheelchairs require a custom component, whereas the
tie-downs are more versatile and will work with most chairs without any
modifications to them.
Yes. With
the side entry
option, a user can enter the vehicle
and secure themselves into the driver or front passenger area with
an EZ
Lock system. Removable seats for these areas
can be installed, allowing both wheelchair and non-wheelchair
users to drive or sit in the passenger seat when desired.
This
depends on the conversion you choose, as well as the
vehicle that is being modified. In general, either the rear or middle
seating will be lost to make room for the conversion and wheel
chair. However, for some vehicle models, if the rear seating is lost there is an option to install a flip-down bench seat.
No. Having
a
vehicle modified with
a wheelchair conversion will
not void its warranty. This is because conversion companies
work closely with automakers to ensure OEM vehicle integrity
is not compromised.
If there
are any conversion
related repairs or maintenance
needed, we will perform them right in our own shops. If you
experience a vehicle related issue, you may take your minivan
to your local dealership as usual.
Motion
Specialties is an authorized vehicle conversion dealer
for Sidewinder
conversions. Conversions are physically performed by this company in
Chilliwack, BC, and are then shipped to one of our office locations
for pick-up.
We do not
sell the vehicle
itself, but we work closely with local dealerships to assist you in
purchasing a vehicle with
respect to pricing and options. We can help arrange the sale
of a new or used minivan for a conversion, sometimes at a
discounted rate.
